Product Details
Phthalic anhydride, commonly referred to as phthalic anhydride, is a white flaky or crystalline powder with the molecular formula: C8H4O3 Molecular weight: 148.12; melting point: 131.1 °C; boiling point: 284.5 °C; flash point: 151 °C (closed cup) and 165 °C (open cup); fire point: 584 °C; density: 1.527 g/cm³. It is poorly soluble in cold water but readily soluble in hot water, ethanol, diethyl ether, benzene, and most other organic solvents. Phthalic anhydride is a cyclic acid anhydride formed by intramolecular dehydration of phthalic acid; it is an important petrochemical feedstock widely used in the production of orthophthalate plasticizers. When condensed with polyols such as glycerol and pentaerythritol, it yields alkyd resins for the paint industry; when condensed with ethylene glycol and unsaturated acids, it produces unsaturated polyester resins, which are used to manufacture insulating varnishes and glass-fiber-reinforced plastics. It also serves as a key intermediate in organic synthesis and as a raw material for the production of coatings, dyes, and saccharin.
